Wednesday Wildlife - Snails

I found this cute snail on the water tank. It's quite tiny even if the photo makes it look huge. I like snails. I like their shell, their body, the elasticity of them. I like those stalks for eyes. I can pick up snail and let it leave it's silvery trail on my hand.

And we have slugs. Big, fat disgusting slugs. I loathe touching them, they're slimy and sticky and revolting. I can't bring myself to load a photo on here - they're gross.

Can you make sense of that? Why do I like one and hate the other when they're related?

And, have you noticed how quickly the weeks are going? No sooner do I do a Wednesday post... than it's Wednesday again! What's the story?

  1. Can't cope with either. Although at age one my mother found me playing in the backyard with a mouth stuffed full of snails. The more she tried to get me to spit them out the more I gritted my teeth. Ugh! So apparently I liked them once :-)

    1. Oh, Lou!! LOL. The backyard escargot.

My mother tells of being on the phone to a woman who was telling her how lucky she was to have girls who stayed inside and played with dolls. She got off the phone to find my sister and I pushing snails on the swing set and catching bugs in the bug catcher. Wow - if only wed been eating snails instead, she would have had a better story to tell!

  2. Love the snail stories Lou & Cate!
I don't like snails because snails threaten my garden, and I hate slugs.
I have eaten snails once, in a French restaurant in Canberra. I was 15 and I believe that I liked them. I was trying to impress whoever we were with, with my sophistication - hence the menu choice. (It was a school trip to see where politicians hang out.)
My kids befriend snails. Or let's be correct. My youngest son befriends them, and his big brother then does things like snatch them from him, put them under one of my pot plants and drop the pot on little Billie, or Freddy, or Bruce...
    It's not pretty!
I like wildlife wednesday. I like warbling magpies too. Love your blog Cate.

    1. Hey Lily,
Thanks for your story :) Nice of the big brother to damage your pots like that - not to mention youngest son!

I take it even though you liked snails at 15, you haven't tried them again?

Thanks for saying you liked these posts. I was wondering if I should keep going, so I will. Thanks!

    2. Correct! Never tried snails again.
I guess Wildlife Wednesday is only limited by just how much wildlife you have roaming your place...
One of my son's little friends (he's English, they've been in Oz about a year and they moved next door) was in our backyard a while ago and I will never forget the way he picked up what I call a "slater bug" and took it to show his dad.
"Look, Daddy," he said. "It's wildlife..."
I reckon if a slater bug can be wildlife... you've got a big wide net to cast!
      Cheers

    3. LOL! I haven't taken a photo of a slater... I did do some insects last week... and I was thinking of extending my backyard to suburb and then maybe state :)
